Tournament Updates From WPT, EPT, Aussie Millions And Borgata Winter Open

With so many big live tournaments coinciding this week, it’s amazing that all of them have been able to post such strong numbers. There are at least half a dozen events on the schedule for today alone; most notable among them are Day 3 of the WPT’s Southern Poker Championship, Day 1B of the EPT Deauville Main Event, Day 2 of the Aussie Millions Main Event, and the Australia Heads Up Championship. It’s been hard even for us to follow everything that’s going down on the felt this week, which is why we’re offering you an easy overview of the most notable action from the last few days.

Aussie Millions

The Aussie Millions Main Event competition began on Sunday, the same day that both the $100,000 Challenge (won by Sam Trickett) and the No Limit Hold’em Teams Event concluded. Monday saw more Main Event Day 1 flights and the start of the Million Dollar Cash Game. The high stakes cash game recreated the much speculated on match-up between Phil Ivey, Patrik Antonius, Tom Dwan, Eli Elezra, John Juanda and three of the Chinese businessmen that had challenged them in Macau last year. The $100,000 minimum buy-in didn’t stop a whole new crew of pros from taking to the table on Tuesday. News on the cash game results is still rolling in.

EPT Deauville

While lifetime earnings runner-up Phil Ivey was prepping for the Australia Heads Up Championship today, the new earnings leader – Daniel Negreanu – was warming his own seat at Day 1B of the EPT Deauville Main Event. That tournament will run from January 25 through January 31.

Borgata Winter Poker Open

Despite losing its WPT sponsorship this year, the Borgata Winter Poker Open is going strong in Atlantic City. The $100,000 Guaranteed NL Hold’em Deep Stack Double Play event began yesterday and will run through tomorrow. There are eight more events between now and the start of the $2 Million Guaranteed Main Event on Sunday with a total of 26 events on offer this year. While the tournament has been largely devoid of familiar faces thus far, a number of notable pros are expected to show up as they finish their business in Melbourne.

WPT Southern Poker Championship

Instead of hosting a Borgata stop this year, the World Poker Tour went south for their Southern Poker Championship at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi, MS. A total of 214 players put up the $10,000 buy-in making for an attractive $2,000,000 prize pool. The championship started January 23 and will finish on Thursday, January 27. Ryan Hughes has a commanding chip lead going into Day 4, but he’s got formidable competition among the remaining 19 players, including defending champion Hoyt Corkins and 2009 champion Allen Carter.
